Data Science Research Project (Graduate Students Only)

Graduate students are required to submit a project report using the IEEE Conference double-column format. Please use the official IEEE template.

Students should choose a project topic relevant to the course and conduct a brief literature review by reading 2–4 related research papers, including at least one paper published after January 2026. The report should clearly reference and discuss these papers.

Report Requirements

The report must satisfy all of the following requirements:

  • Focus on at least one clearly defined data science technique or methodology (e.g., clustering, deep learning, data privacy, data distillation, anomaly detection, causal inference, reinforcement learning, graph learning, etc.) and discuss its principles, applications, advantages, and limitations.
  • Use the required IEEE Conference template and meet the minimum length requirement:
    • At least 3 pages for an individual report;
    • At least 5 pages for reports with two or more authors;
    • The page count includes figures, tables, and references.
  • Include your own analysis, discussion, and conclusions, rather than simply summarizing the literature.
  • Include at least one figure or table that helps explain or compare the reviewed methods or findings.
  • All sources must be properly cited using the IEEE citation style.

Use of AI

Generative AI tools may be used only as writing or brainstorming assistants. The report must reflect your own understanding, critical analysis, and original writing. Submitting AI-generated content as your own work, or relying on AI to produce the report without substantial human authorship and critical evaluation, constitutes academic misconduct and violates the course Academic Honesty Policy.

Grading Policy

Failure to satisfy any of the following requirements will result in a maximum possible score of 80% on the report:

  • The report does not focus on at least one clearly defined data science technique or methodology.
  • The required IEEE Conference template is not used.
  • The report does not meet the minimum page requirement.
  • The report lacks original analysis, discussion, or conclusions.
  • The report does not include at least one figure or table.
  • The report contains substantial AI-generated content without meaningful original analysis.

The final report must be submitted before the final class (Dec 2) of the course.
